Latest News - Friday January 16th

We've enjoyed a wonderful first 2 weeks of 2026 at Waunarlwydd! Our first week back saw snow in the air and we thoroughly enjoyed our whole school snowball fight on the field. Our 'Food Glorious Food' topic has started and the children and staff have loved learning and laughing together.

Staffing update

Staffing Update | Auguston Traditional ElementaryWe would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Anna Evans for nearly 20 years of undoubted commitment to the children of Waunarlwydd. Mrs Evans has decided to move in a different direction and pursue a new career path and challenge. She has had an incredibly positive impact on so many children at different stages of their schooling and has successfully made a huge difference in several leadership roles during her time at Waunarlwydd. I am sure you will join us in wishing her every success for her future. You will be missed Mrs Evans but make sure you stay in touch with Waunarlwydd School!

The Nursery have been completing a mini topic about Winter, and what a great start by having a snowy day where we could enjoy playing on the field and in the woods in the snow. We have painted snowmen, made mosaic snowflakes, made snowflakes out of sticks, cooked snowflake biscuits, sorted items that are needed for Summer or Winter and filled cups with pretend snowballs.  We have read lots of Winter stories and talked about ways to keep Percy the Parkkeeper warm, in the story "One Snowy Day". Reception have enjoyed exploring winter through their senses - especially after the snowy first few days! They have made snowmen in the playdough, played with arctic animals and created homes for them using blocks, made a unique snowman, then sorted them by the colour of their hat and scarf, used cold colours to paint wintry pictures and baked some tasty snowman cookies. The children were proud to take their first reading books home! In readiness for our new Caffi Cwtch role-play area, the children voted on a name for the cafe and have started to make signs and menus to use, as well as learning how we can pay for items using pennies.

It's been all about food in Years 1 and 2 with the super starter being a huge hit. Making fruit kebabs, a food smell test, a food feely bag, cafe role-play, planting cress seeds, graphing favourite foods and writing instructions to wash hands are just a few favourites. Other high points have included making pizzas, creating pictograms of favourite fruits and ice-cream on JIT and looking at the 'Eatwell' plate to learn about food groups and their importance. Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed their Immersion Day for 'Food Glorious Food' on Monday. Activities included growing cress, making fruit kebabs, blindfolded sniff testing and many more. The afternoon food tasting was a big hit with the children guessing which countries different foods came from. The vegetable samosas went down very well in particular! A discussion about mindfulness breathing after lunch one day led to a fantastic discussion about how our bodies use oxygen and how blood is transported around the body. In addition, the children are finding out all about types of teeth and what they are used for. They are enjoying listening to the class story 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' which they chose at the beginning of term.

Year 4,5 and 6 have had a great start to the year, with some particular high points. Top of the pile has been exploring foods from all around the world and learning spanish. There have been some amazing scents filling the corridors as the children have cooked some very exotic dishes. Their persuasive work has centred around promoting 'Our school' and the promotional videos have been superb. Welsh has been a hit this week with the introduction of Welsh snap a big hit. Miss Maggs' class are also making great progress in their swimming sessions.

"Firstly, a massive thank you to all parents for all your support during our events to raise money for our wonderful children during their time at Waunarlwydd Primary. We have purchased some amazing resources over the last year such as playground equipment for all ages, new equipment for the Year 1 yard and resources for all classes. We now have a bigger project in mind!!
As you may have noticed, our beloved park has been disappearing piece by piece, which is a great disappointment to the children! We have been working hard since last year towards purchasing a new play area for our yard! This will benefit the children massively with imaginative play, exercise and all-round fun at break times!

This is a big project and, as you can imagine, requires a lot of money. We would like the bulk of our fundraising this year to go towards this project.

Next event - Thursday march 12th - UV SPRING BALL
If anyone would like to be involved in our ever growing PTA family please don’t hesitate to get in touch and join our team 🥰

Thanks everyone!"
